Phoenix, AZ - USA

Post by crgcas »

Should be beautiful here in January. Does anyone have some good suggestions for this crawl where we might just happen to end up at a sushi place at the end? Just suggesting...

Was that really a suggestion or a hint. Did YOU have someplace in mind?

Speaking of food......my husband and I were looking for a new restaurant. He had heard about the Wandering Horse Buffet at the Walking Stick resort/casino off of Pima Rd. and Indian Bend. Very easy to get to from the 101. Lunch is $12.95 plus tax ($25 on Saturday) but certainly worth it. The cappuccino and lemoncello gelatos are yummy, too. Other flavors as well. Tasted better than some that I had in Italy. Don't know where they get theirs from.

I don't suppose they allow sketching/photographing in the casino area but maybe there are places outside in the courtyard/garden area. And I suppose noone is going to stop one from photographing or sketching your food either.

If we don't go there this time maybe everyone can save their pennies and we can do this at a future time.

We will be back to that restaurant fairly soon and will scout out possible interesting sites.

Last year I took the light rail the full distance and back from the Christown stop to see what it was like. Very hard seats and can't remember much about the scenery. What did you have in mind?

Walking Stick Resort....again

Post by Mossgate »

Hi everyone.....

I just returned from the Walking Stick Resort in north Scottsdale after another one of those really nice meals at the Wandering Horse Buffet. I took a walk around the resort from the inside (looking out). I really think it would be a nice place for a sketchcrawl. With the weather being uncertain it would be nice to be inside or out depending on the weather that day. There is lots....I mean l-o-t-s.... of really nice seating with tables to rest your stuff on. And, YES, you can use your cameras in the casino. Lots of visual bling...colorful lights on slot machines could make a really colorful watercolor. There is LOTS of seating outside with tables, too, in the "gardens".....mostly pathches of cactus on a big plaza, a waterfall with large boulders, and a distant view of the mountain range. ..... There is also a coffee shop and a cafe which have very normal prices so one could have a snack and coffee without a problem. All this is within close proximity to each other so none of us would even be that far away.

Oh, they also have a very nice display of native American pottery....a mini museum in the place. Great subject matter.

The resort is just off of the 101 and Indian Bend Road. It takes me going the speed limit from the northern most end of the 101 a half hour to get there. I can supply more detailed directions if that is our choice for this event. Think about it...........

To get to the Talking Stick Resort and casino take the 101 and get off at E. Indian Bend. Then head east. Go straight ahead past N.Dobson and a short distance down E. Indian Bend on the left there will be a large sign which (I believe) says Casino Arizona. Turn left there. Ignore the first driveway to the right. It says "no entrance". Take the next driveway also on the right. Continue straight ahead ignorning the large tent structure. Go on to a stop sign. A road crosses to the left and right. You can either go straight ahead if there are no barracades to the middle parking lot of the resort or go right to the lower parking lot.

The first two times we went there we were able to park in the middle parking area...the upper area being valet parking. This past visit, there were barracades at the middle parking area because that had been made into valet parking, too. So we had to turn right go back out to E. Indian Bend, then turning right and then right again at the next entrance back into the parking area again. It isn't as confusing as it seems once you've done it. You can see the resort and parking areas clearly enough. They just made more of a rat maze out of it for some reason the last time we were there. Something big must have been going on. The parking lots do get pretty full, too, by afternoon.

Make sure you look up to see the post with the location of where you are parked. There is a central sidewalk that leads to the casino lobby entrance.

You can walk around the circular perimeter of the casino and look at all the colorful slot machines, etc. or walk straight down the middle of the casino and then to the left to the Wandering Horse Buffet on the same level. Past the buffet restaurant is the lobby to the resort with the Indian pottery in show cases to the left, I believe. So just wander around and you'll look out large windows to the "gardens" on the lower level as well as the lower level coffee shop. You will see really comfortable seating all over the place inside and out.

Everything is so simple to find there that we could already make arrangements to meet at noon or whenever at that open, lower level coffee shop.

Craig, do you have any other suggestions? If not, what do you propose for an arrival and coffee shop meeting time?

That sounds great to me! Thanks for scouting the place out.

Is 9am a good meeting time at the coffee shop?

I really like the idea of setting up multiple meeting times for the people who can't make it earlier.

Not a bad idea, I will be there at 9 or so and we will all meet up for lunch at some point. What other times do we want to arrange?

Craig,

I'm in for 9 a.m. On Saturday, I expect the earlier one gets there the better considering how full the parking lot is going to get.

NEW SKETCHCRAWL BLOG I have recently constructed a multi-blog site with Mossgate Journal Cafe being the central hub. One blog is dedicated to the SketchCrawls and can be found at this link http://mossgatejournal6.blogspot.com/ You can return to the central hub by clicking on the blog's link which says "Return To Mossgate Journal Cafe."

I haven't found all of my previous sketchcrawl images yet, but have put some into a slideshow on that blog at the right of the posted commemts area.

For the meeting place at 9am, what is the name of the place?
The restaurants are listed here:

Annie,

I don't know that the coffee shop has a name. Directly across from the entrance to the Wandering Horse Buffet restaurant is a walkway with lots of large windows. If you walk along that walkway keeping the windows to your left you will notice a balcony running along your right side. Look down at the floor below. You will see the open area below with lots of tables and chairs. The chairs have a design like tree branches on them. That's the coffee shop. There is another eating place called a Cafe but that isn't what I'm referring to.
