Chinatown sounds great. Great place to people watch and sketch.

Hope the rain has passed by then. I was there a few days ago before visiting the cartoon art museum and it was pretty miserable hiding under overhangs.

I'm going to be coming up from Los Angeles and I can't get a hold of my friend in SF. Can anyone recommend a good/cheap hostel/hostel?

I've stayed at the Green Tortoise before, but anyone have suggestions for an alternative?

Hey Jim, the downtown SF hostel (I think it's a Hostel International) is pretty comfy, and right by Union Square. That's within walking distance of Chinatown - and if Sketchcrawl isn't in Chinatown (?), it's near bus stops and BART.

For reservations etc: http://sfhostels.com/downtown/

I'm looking forward to drawing~

I think Chinatown is a good idea...

EXCEPT for the fact that the place gets insane with tourists and the locals. So be prepared for there to be little room to stand, much less draw.....

There are some pockets where I think we can go, but we should stay off the main street where the gate is. I mean, drawing the gate is fine...but going into Chinatown on that street is going to be a bit hectic...

As for places to get grub, there's a nice cafe on Masonic near the trolley car museum. It's called The Gallery Cafe and they've got good coffee and excellent bagels.

Chinatown - Stockton Street

Post by colinadams »

I agree, Grant street is both hectic and for tourists. The real flavor of Chinatown (worlds largest population of Chinese outside of China is right there in SF) is on Stockton street. Stockton street runs parallel to Grant one block uphill, and there you will find strange shops selling shark fins, frogs for food, strange vegetables, and all sorts of dried mysteries. There is almost never English in these shops at all, and hardly a tourist in sight. Stockton street goes all the way down to North Beach. A really great place to sketch.

Yes !!! 11 am meeting my crawler friends !!! Seems like Chinatown it is.

Here's a map of the meeting point, let's meet in Portsmouth Square, the little park right above the parking lot on Kearny Street (between Clay and Washington). This is the point right were we ended one of our last Crawls for those of you who were there. We'll probably end it there too after perusing the hood for the day.

For those of you who wanted to hit Pacific Heights, don't feel like you can't, I am all for drawing what you want on a Crawl ... so you could either meet us in chinatown at 11 then go to pacific heights or just meet with the chinatown group a little later ...
Here's a link to google maps

and here's the map with the meeting point:

Ok, as always u can check in with me through out the day if needed ... on my cell is (415)624-6842

so ... see you saturday !!!

:)

I'm planning to be in San Francisco for this crawl! I'm really looking forward to meeting all of you and sketching some of my hometown.

I'll be driving up from L.A. Friday night and will be in town for the long weekend, plus a couple days or so, depending. If anyone knows of any interesting art happenings/galleries going on during that time, please let me know. I'm looking to make this a big art and inspiration venture!

:D

Looks like its going to be fun. I kid you not it has been years since the last time I was in Chinatown.

Please take some pictures of the event.
