I just saw his book, "All Over Coffee," at the local bookstore and it had these wonderful ink line and wash drawings of San Francisco.
When he first started, he drew them on site. Later, as they became more complex and the strip schedule changed, Paul would sketch, take photo reference, and then finish them at his studio. Check out his site and click on the All Over Coffee to see some great drawings.
