New Plymouth, New Zealand [RESULTS]

Post by thetaranakisketchers »

Here in New Zealand we have the privilege of waking first in the world so get to post first.

We are located here Image on the West Coast looking out on a symmetrical dormant volcano.

It dawned hot and sunny with an on-shore breeze. We'd decided on a rough theme of sculptures, monuments, murals etc in situ, in context.

A three week international rock carving symposium had just finished yesterday along the foreshore walkway and we figured that would count. So a number of us headed there, watching them move the completed andesite work around for better display using a small tractor and mobile block and tackle. You can see some of their work http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/regional/ ... waterfront

Several of us moved up to the war memorial where a 105mm 1960's gun has been located. Little kids were climbing over it.

After lunch at 'The Public Catering Co' a delightful eatery we broke into different directions. I sketched the clock tower which I rationalised was a kind of monument. In 1969 our original clock tower was demolished as an earthquake risk, and after some controversy it took 16 years before a faithful replica was constructed, and the old clock put back into action after some TLC by an expert horologist.

Many onlookers brought their dogs. Some stopped for their portraits. A couple of owners went away with a sketch of their dog tucked under their arm

Maurice chose our millenium wind wand project. The kinetic work of the well known New York artist (a former NZer) who donated his work to our city. We have recently built a controversial Len Lye Centre dedicated to his work. See more here http://govettbrewster.com/len-lye/centre

Maurice said:
"Sketch a monument etc.... the New Plymouth waterfront and its now famous walkway with the Len Lye inspired Windwand was an instant attraction for me . A busy summers day. MLB"

Trevor was the clever one who remembered his camera.

Some shots of our party before we set out. We had one new guest.

I had to get Trevor in his own photo, so another shot

I was traveling home from Auckland today, so I didn't manage to join our group The Taranaki Sketchers.

While we were waiting at the airport my 6 year old Grandson and I did a quick sketch to at least have done something! You could say he is the youngest member of the group. He only comes out with us very occasionally, (he's a bit young yet), but he loves to sketch and draw with me at home.

I did a quick 30 minute pencil drawing of one of the Air NZ Staff:

And he drew the fish on my watercolour pencil packet:

New Plymouth seems to have a reasonable amount of public art around the place. For this sketchcrawl, we tried to have a theme of the art that is around but to also try to show it in it's context. Try to visually describe where it is. I also brought some paints out this weekend. I'm a bit of a watercolour noob, but it turned out okay. I did a second quick one with a pen from the other direction.
