We had an awesome day sketching at the new Len Lye Centre today. The weather was fantastic and there was plenty to do and see. One of our sketchers Trevor Davies even ended up with a mention in the local newspaper and on the national TV 3 news while doing his sketch! There has been a lot of hoopla for and against this centre. Now that it is built with no public money, but all fundraised over many years I think it is going to be a huge draw-card to the region. It is already being called an art destination spot.

Here is Trevor's sketch:

Norah another member of our group sat outside and sketched the people going by:

I went inside and tried my hand at the Four Fountains exhibition. These were first designed by Len Lye in the 1960,s.

Here is my sketch:

Maurice sketched the new Len Lye Centre and the old Govett Brewster Art Gallery which has been earthquake strengthened and revamped.

Keep watching there is more to come!

Roads closed for #LenLyeCentreOpening

After having an early start to the day and attending the opening of the Len Lye Centre, I soon focused on sketching one of
New Plymouth's oldest streets.

Adorned with the new and shining magnificence of the Len Lye Centre, Devon Street West features in my drawing draped with
long afternoon shadow and a procession of bright orange traffic cones.

As today was also Worldwide SketchCrawl Day, it was a welcoming break to have two interludes at a central city cafe, eating delicious food and looking at other sketches done by the group. It was a very enjoyable day.

The re-opening of the Govett Brewster Art Gallery, including the new stainless steel Len Lye Centre. They closed the streets around the building for the opening ceremony (but mostly so that everyone could get photos and selfies in the mirrored steel outer surface). The White Hart Hotel, one of New Plymouth's oldest buildings, is an interesting neighbour for it. The old and the new, both very challenging to sketch. The White Hart just has so much detail. If you don't draw it all, when do you stop? And the Len Lye Centre, is just plain weird. It's like trying to draw a Photoshop filter. I sat on the step across the street for several hours while trying to figure out where it all goes.

Here are some photos I took on the day:

The Four Fountains.

This little girl loved the mirror people.

The mirror people. These were very cleverly done. Their costumes were made out of lots of little bits of mirror.

The Steam Punk people were out and about.

BMD. On the Sunday the public got to colour this exhibit in.

What a great day!

Whilst the team were keeping the home fires burning I was fortunate enough to be on the sketch walk at the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Singapore. Here are a couple from the same day.

Singapore National library. We had a free ice cream from the cart which was dripping in the 33C heat before we could finish it.

We couldn't go past the concierges at the Raffles Hotel without drawing them

Nearly 400 were on the sketch walk. This was my attempt at the Singapore National Museum.

We had a great day with thousands of people turning out to see the new Len Lye centre and we had a very enjoyable day doing our sketchcrawl, finishing off with a coffee and a show and tell.
