Gold Coast, QLD, Australia [RESULTS]

Post by RebeccaArtist »

Destination: Southport.

City developers have lots planned for Southport, so for those of you with a historic bent, this is an interesting moment to capture Southport "as it is now." We'll meet up at 3:30 in the lobby area of the Southport Branch Library--there are some benches, a cafe, and restrooms there. Don't get too comfortable because as soon as we've collected together, we'll head off for great drawing adventures. We'll roam and sketch from 3:30 to about 5:30 with the possibility of a stop for noodles or Asian-inspired desserts afterwards for those interested.

Despite the massive storm that hit shortly after we started, our group of four had a good time.

First we hunkered down and drew through the rain-covered windows of the library lobby...there were some people out on the streets but the rain at one point was coming in sideways in huge gusts and multiple trees lost branches so most people were seeking shelter like us.

When things calmed down a bit we covered up and dared the residual rain to seek a different shelter.

We'd planned on possibly stopping at iSweet, a nearby Asian dessert place, on our way back. Instead, we sheltered there next. We tried two different dishes, splitting them between us, and swapped art supplies around the table to test out water pens and tortillions. Fun experimentation was had by all.

By the time we left, rain coats and plastic bags could finally be stowed away and the sky was pretending it hadn't stormed at all. We followed the streets toward the water, forgetting to cross the street at one point because we were so busy talking (which made it just long enough of a wait to get a quick sketch of tram, bus, and car all stopped at the opposite cross walk).

At the water's edge we were rewarded with a rainbow and sparkling sunshine glinting down on boats and skyscrapers alike.
