New Plymouth (New Zealand) [RESULTS]

Post by gnyp »

This is the second SketchCrawl in row in New Plymouth that it has rained pretty hard on the day. Since we're keeners, we all gave it a go anyway.
Our theme for this one was pre-1950's houses which was difficult due to the rain. I drew this first one while in my car! (I wasn't entirely sure about how to draw it rainy without putting down too much ink or colouring it. So what you see here is a rainy house that could be a dry one.

New Zealand has quite a few wooden houses that are nearly 100 years old. The 'villa', as they are called, is a single-floor bungalow, made of local timber, and have dashes of ornamental details. The house that I live in is about 90 years old and has decorative plaster ceilings (another common villa characteristic) in nearly every room. Every now and then one of them disappears and is replaced by the new and modern.

As we ate lunch, the rain eased off and were able to get out there again for one more:

Hiya

Great sketches guys.

Brian...
I particularly like the "Cameron and Gilbert" sketch.. something about the angle that makes it very interesting too.

Cheers

Hi there,
I had to work for this sketchcrawl, so what with the rain and work I didn't get as much done as I would have liked. I did make it to lunch with everyone, and got a quick sketch in there which I will post later.

Last Sketchcrawl we wanted to show some of the different New Zealand architecture, which I thought we hadn't fully achieved, so we decided to carry the theme on. As Brian said slowly our little old "Colonial" style villas are disappearing, so it is important to try and capture images of them while they are still there. Some of them certainly have a lot of character.
