New Zealand [RESULTS]

Post by gnyp »

On a rainy winter day in New Plymouth, we decided that we would all sketch the places that we live (sketching INSIDE, basically). Even with the indoor sketching, we don't really have many sketcher numbers on this particular weekend. We recruited Murray from Auckland who said that he might have the time to draw with us from his place today too.
It's still a bit early, but here are some of the first sketches to come in:

Everyone is still drawing so there will still be more to come!

Hi Brian...

Sorry to hear about your weather.. I guess it is winter down under.

Well us Vancouver sketchers shoud number 16 or more as per my tally but we will see tomorrow morning.
The weather has been great all week I just hope it stays that way for our sketching.
We plan to start at the Coal Harbour end of Denman Street and sketch the boats an harbour then gradually work along the sea wall into Stanley Park past the Vancouver Rowing Club.

I think I will turn in early tonight ... We are supposed to meet at 9am

Thanks for the invitation Brian. A good idea to have a New Zealand page I reckon as we're all so spread out. I of course wasn't organised anyway. I ended up doing a sketch of Bungalow Bills music shop on Khyber Pass Road. Looking forward to seeing some more kiwi sketches!
If anyone is interested we have a group sketching at the Manu Aute Kite day (Part of Auckland's Matariki festival)next Saturday at Orakei Marae. Check out the facebook group for more information... http://www.facebook.com/events/388450101213143/

Nice one, Murray! Good to see that you were able to draw today.

This is my other one that I did for the rest of the day (when not in a cafe).

There is this Phoenix Palm tree in front of my house. I have this love/hate thing for it. I love it that it seems tropical (since I'm from Canada originally) but I've had to go to the doctor's two times so far because of it. This type of tree has really sharp spikes that become infected easily and can easily go through leather gloves.

Here is a sketch from Jan. By coincidence, she also decided to draw her dog, and by coincidence her dog is also a greyhound!
(I think she adopted her dog about two weeks ago.)

Here is Jackie's sketch of her house since she was unable to upload to the forum this weekend herself.

She says:
"This is my house which was built in 1971. It is pretty typical of houses in New Zealand of that age. It's a brick house with basement, aluminium windows and an iron roof which we replaced in about 2007, (because the old one leaked like a sieve). The glassed in area in the front porch was added much later in the 1990's. Around another side which I haven't drawn is a concrete deck area which is now closed in by a conservatory. This will have originally been open with white wrought iron railings. The original ranch sliders from the dining room and lounge which access it are still there. We have lived in this house for 12 1/2 years and it has been a great friend to us - Jackie."

Also included, is a progress pic, before the colour:

I like this little vertical batton and board cottage which sits up off the road. One very different thing about it is the two chimneys.

I couldn't sketch on actual sketchcrawl day due to my parents big move from the farm into retirement. The picture Brian posted of my house was done during the week before the rain. I also did one of the farmhouse:

This is a pretty typical farm house. Weather board with iron roof. I think this one was built in about the 1950's. It was built using native timber milled from the farm, which probably wouldn't happen today. It served my parents well.

I live about 25 minutes north of New Plymouth, and the farm is about an hour north. Thankfully for me it didn't rain in either place, and by the time we got to the new house on the outskirts of New Plymouth, the rain there had eased off a lot.

Wow, it's great to see so many classic New Zealand architectural styles represented here. I like the pheonix palm (I know what you mean about the spikes form personal experience, they're nasty) through your bungalow windows, Brian and Jackie's excellent brick and tile. It's fun drawing all those bricks isn't it!

Acting as foreign correspondent for The Taranaki Sketchers, and because there were no Shanghai sketchers to meet up whilst visiting here.

Thanks Joan, the local theme was chosen due to the weather but it still can be a fun topic.

This was Maurice's contribution on the day:
