The "essential" colors for a sketching kit?

Sketch crawl is just around the corner and I am making lists of stuff to pack in my sketching bag. It's my first SC and I am looking forward to it and I enjoy being totally soaked up by planning what to bring.

So, I am bringing a small tin box with water colors with space for a maximum of around 12 colors.

But WHICH colors should i pick?
I know, it's a matter of preference of course, but which colors would you suggest would be the most essential to "cover" the needs for "all-round" needs?

Suggestions appreciated and photos would be great of your personal choices of colors.

I can't make recommendations because 12 never seems enuf--although it should be more than enough. 8)

I change my mind all the time especially in the blue and yellow colours.

If I can get it down to 12, I'll post but right now I am at 24 and may carry more than one palette.

I bought these teeny tiny metal palette boxes and can get 12 in each of the two.

Hi annelito ---- There is good advice on watercolor colors here from Mr. MacEvoy: http://www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/palette5.html

Scroll down a few inches on that web page to the box labeled 'paint list for the basic palette'. Those are outstanding basic suggestions.

lol

Very first sentence made me laugh (from the link posted above).

"The beginner's mistake is always ... too many paints. Too many paints!"

Good article, thank you for sharing.
