New Plymouth New Zealand [RESULTS] under the mountain

Post by thetaranakisketchers »

Kia Ora Global Sketchers,

Owing to a quirk in the great cosmic switching yards, along with Auckland and Wellington our alarm clocks go off a little earlier than yours.

This year the brainwave was a cycling sketch crawl along our award winning Coastal Walkway. What a day! gorgeous calm, blue-skied, sunny spells, mixed with scudding squalls racing in from the Tasman sea to give us heavy dumping. At one point the sky over the mountain was pitch black. But still the bikes were a lot of fun, and the weather didn't seem to hinder the yacht races and the surfers or us.

Hi everyone!
What a great day out sketching and biking. Some of us hadn't been on a bike for quite a while, but what a great way to sketch.
First of all we cycled down to the port, and sketched the fishermen on the Lee Breakwater and the fishing boats etc.

Fishing from the Lee Breakwater.

Unfortunately Eileen and I got drowned in a squall on our way back for lunch, but we soon dried off.

Lunch at Cafe Govett-Brewster.
Image

After lunch we cycled along towards Fitzroy.

This is Eileen trying to sketch a seagull, but it took off at a crucial moment!

Image
Our bikes parked up.

Unfortunately we got another squall in the middle of sketching, so that one will follow as it's half done!

This one is of the Huatoki Plaza Lights in town where Eileen and I sought shelter from the rain.

And the final debrief and afternoon tea.

What a great day. Absolutely an inspired idea!

Hi..

I'll come back again later this week-end after my crawl but just checked in to see what happened in NZ.
 Scott... I think you captured not only Brian's likeness but his character too..
Great stuff..

I just did a remote crawl for a French town.. it will be posted with "Taties" post tomorrow.

Well it's off to bed so I can get up early and do my Vancouver crawl. My eyes are bleary and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

A bit of a wet day today... but the sun kept coming back to tempt us. I decided to use a red ball-point pen again since I had some pretty good success with it on the last SketchCrawl a few months ago.
Image
We started out at Port Taranaki and the weather was fine. I started this one of an unfinished yacht in the area where they build ships for premium customers. Like the boatbuilders, I stopped work on it as well. The rain was coming in and I thought that I wanted to be in the CBD when the rain came. Some of the others weren't so lucky!
At lunch we got to see who made it there dry. A good recharge. I did a quick sketch of a kid having lunch (and moving quite a bit).
Image
We decided to head east on the Coastal Pathway. We could see another front coming in off the water so we decided to look for some shelter that we could use when the rain hit. It turns out that we got there just as it hit and it stayed for a while. We ended up sketching a bit at the Fitzroy Surf Club. The view is roughly in the same direction as my first sketch and shares some of the same background.

Thanks mzsketcherusa.

I'm not sure how intrepid we were but the bikes made a change in how far we could range.
I'm sure your weather in CA would have been slightly more conducive to sketching.

Attached is a pic of the Tombow ABTs I carried, I very recently bought the full complement so am spoilt for choice. They weigh about the same as my little sketching stool!

Wow, a prolific effort in New Plymouth! Great sketches and really good to see so many out, and on bikes as well, my personal sketch vehicle of choice. Educational too — I had no idea we pumped oil back then. Great work.

Yes CyberDave I like such decisions, and it is a home made bag, I chopped the top off one and the bottom of another and stitched them together.

Thanks Murray, we always have a laugh and I was surprised how much fun the bike sketching was.

New Plymouth New Zealand [RESULTS] under the mountain

Post by thetaranakisketchers »

Thanks CyberDave for the encouragement (and that includes to all the other sketchers you have replied to), and the Moderation role.

One last sketch from the Saturday night at a little country hall where there was a party on. A lot of the friends were ceroc (modern jive) dancers, so the women were flung over shoulders, swung prostrate on the floor etc very entertaining.
Other friends played the Djembe drums and Island slit drums. They called themselves Drum Rise. It was a bit hard to draw in the dark.
