New Plymouth New Zealand [RESULTS] under the mountain

Post by thetaranakisketchers »

New Zealand has the privilege of seeing the new day first, enabling our little sketching group 'The Taranaki Sketchers' to post the first results.

New Plymouth is a thriving provincial town on the bump of the west coast of the North Island.

Midwinter weather meant some in and outdoor sketching, but having to dress for it. Visits to the library, the museum plus some street scenes as the day cleared.

The Taranaki Sketchers had a great day out sketching today in spite of the cold and sometimes wet. The day did improve a bit as it went on.
My strategy for the day was to try and use a different tool for every sketch.
First effort stabilo pens.

This Japanese fish was hanging up in the Puke Ariki Library. I hadn't used stabilo pens before, but found them very good.
Image

Next was the Taranaki Daily News Cafe. This time I used 2 B Pencil.
Image
This man was reading the paper in the Taranaki Daily News Cafe. The clocks on the wall give the times for London, New York, New Plymouth, Tokyo, and Paris.

Next I went to the Museum at Puke Ariki and drew looking out the window, as the weather was still cold and a bit iffy.
Image
This is The Landing Cafe and the Backpackers building. The flags on the top are the flags of the countries playing in New Plymouth for the Rugby World Cup.
I did this one in biro, only snag I didn't have a green and yellow biro so I used stabilo pen instead. But the plan is to get as many different colour biros as I can.

Last but not least:
Image
New Plymouth Clock Tower.
My last sketch of the day with Rotring Pen and watercolour.
I went back to my favourite things.
I quite like the effect of the sky painting wet into wet.

And here you see my toolkit!
Image
I ran out of steam at this stage so I didn't use my watercolour pencil or pastels. So maybe next sketchcrawl!

Taranaki sketchers...

Excellent sketches. It seems you had a good day despite the cold.
Thought I would check in and see whether anyone had posted. Wanted to get some more inspiration.
Liz - Fantastic people sketches... Kinetic Millenium Wind Wand? Looks interesting.
Scott - Love the Police car and library people.
Trevor - I love the old style barber shop and the people sketches
Jackie - fantastic architectural sketches... a prolific day.
Brian - I know you were drawing, I just did not see your sketches yet.
Keep up the great work.

It's 5:30am in Vancouver Canada and I am just getting up ready for my day of sketching. I am all rarin' to go.
Our group meets in Chinatown at 9:00am for a full day.

Cheers
Dave

Here are my sketches from the day:
Image
It started out to be rainy and I did this one as we waited and hoped for better weather. (It turns out we had to settle for dry but cold!)

Image
The White Hart Hotel would be one of the oldest building in New Plymouth and in recent years has been reasonably derelict. People have started to restore/renovate it to make it offices shops and a restaurant. I wanted to capture it while it still was in progress with scaffolding and construction signs. (On writing this, I noticed that the building peeking in from the left is scheduled to be taken down to make room for an extension to our art gallery.)

One final one after we all warmed up our hands at lunch.

Merci beacoup Sophie - looking forward to Clavier team's work again.

Thanks Dave for your comments to us all. Actually Brian had mentioned you were all off to Chinatown, he had noted that, seeing he comes from near Vancouver.

Thanks too 'eyes' for the thumbs up, it keeps us encouraged.

Likewise thanks, Sketchgurl, TravellingSue and AJ4Art glad there was a ember of motivation there. We enjoy seeing everyone elses contributions.

Brian is our ballpoint pen shading guru. The White Hart was built in 1886 with 30,000 cubic metres of timber including rimu (red pine) and mati (black pine). Originally built in Italianate palazzo style in 1901 an extra 20 metres fo frontage and Queen Anne stick verandah was added. It is infamous for the 1893 hold-up there by 'The Highwayman' who had been reading Dick Turpin!

Good to see the sketchers out no matter what the weather. Bit like that here in Sydney yesterday.
Love all your different styles. Great work congratulations.

My golly you Kiwis are prolific. So many sketches. I really like the ones with just a little bit of watercolour. It's a good look.
Great sketches, and the pub one is wonderful.

Thank-you everyone for the fantastic comments. We are all looking forward to seeing your sketches as they are posted. It's quite fun being the first ones to sketch. We all enjoyed our day especially myself and Brian as it was his first sketchcrawl, and my first one where I didn't have to go to work halfway through it!
Thank-you Dave for the architectural comment, as I find architecture and getting perspective right the most challenging thing to draw. Also thank-you quirkyartist for the watercolour comment. It's my favourite look too.
As Scott said, Brian is our Ballpoint man, and I'm enjoying drawing with something so everyday as a ballpoint pen. His sketches are now posted and looking great. :D
