Mendocino Coast, CA FINAL RESULTS

Post by gaelwriter »

A little breezy and overcast today, but fine for sketching along the coast. I decided to try and capture a couple of the forts that people construct from driftwood found along the beaches. Such projects have a primitive appeal to us, erecting a safe haven from the elements, using only the materials nature offers. Some of these forts become quite elaborate when there are plenty of materials at hand, like after a storm, when the ocean delivers tons of new driftwood to the beach. The forts are built anew, then the next storm sweeps those away, and the gods await what these strange creatures will build next.

The first sketch is of the Alder Creek outlet to the ocean.

Next is a sketch of a fort built beside a sand bank south of Alder Creek estuary:

Next, a sketch of another fort farther south on Manchester Beach:

And finally, walking away from coastline, an Alder Creek cattle ranch:

Hi Gael,
another crawler here in Tallahassee independently directed me to your forts, but I had already seen them! There's something to that!
Jeff visited Mendocinco and knew its history. Very interesting

Many thanks to travellingsuep, sophie, mark, and manfred for those kind remarks. Tell Jeff thanks also, Mark. It's worth a lot to merit the approval of fellow artists in Sketchcrawl. I'm looking forward to our next Sketchcrawl. Meanwhile, I'll keep my pencils and paints busy at the local, weekly life drawing sessions.
