Seattle, Washington USA RESULTS!!!

Post by beth »

Hoping for a brave turnout this time around. Tell your friends, Seattleites! Let's get the word out and share this event with everyone we can!
I'm up for Fishermen's Terminal (of course) or Gasworks Park, or Pike Place Market? What are your ideas? Let's have some fun!

Beth,
I'm a fan of fisherman's terminal, I would also suggest Alki and St. Michelle Winery (http://www.ste-michelle.com/winery/photoGallery).

Great ideas, Mark! A couple new members of Seattle Plein Air have suggested Pioneer Square and the Arboretum too. Just thought I'd throw that in in case they don't visit this forum. I will look forward to wherever gets selected!

Re: Seattle, Washington USA Saturday May 15

Since this event will be a Saturday in May I personally would like to avoid super busy tourist type places, they will be packed with people and spots to do sketching are likely to be pretty limited.

Outdoors, in nature would be great, but also might be quite busy. Quiet places might be university grounds---UW or Seattle U or one of the community colleges. Any large interesting building that would be open to us----maybe a church? Would the Columbia Tower or Smith Tower be open to us? What about the railroad station at King Street? I mentioned taking the light rail out to Sea-Tac on another site, would this be an option?

Here's an idea.....the University Street Fair is that weekend.....there will be many sights to sketch there and the UW grounds are nearby if anyone wants to escape to a quieter more tree and nature type spot. At 10 a.m. the street fair will likely be "reasonable" but by noon crowded and dense, so I would be one to find a quieter spot at that time.

Hey, Jan, sounds like something for everyone all right! The only difficulty I see is parking during the street fair. It's easy for me, I can take the bus! I'm willing to try whatever venue is selected by consensus over the next few weeks. Maybe SPA should set up another campus meetup too, earlier or later -- it's a wonderful place full of life. (Urban Sketchers went there March 21 -- but there was no street fair then!)

Re: Seattle, Washington USA....parking issues

Post by jnewday »

Well, I gotta say----parking in Seattle on a weekend in the springtime??!! Definitely doesn't matter where you go, this will be a bit of a struggle. Public transportation will work for some people, maybe some can collaborate and carpool, or ride a bike. In general, finding a good parking spot in most of Seattle's congested neighborhoods, and especially anywhere downtown, is going to be tough. I don't know of anywhere that folks might want to go sketching that would have an easy parking situation.

Re: Seattle, Washington USA....another suggestion

Post by jnewday »

I'd like to offer another suggestion, rich in local history and full of diverse cultures-----your local cemetery! I live near the Evergreen-Washelli cemetery near Aurora and 115th, and it is a great place to walk; lots of trees, birds, some fountains, a huge variety of cultures represented---each with a separate section----military, Asian, Jewish, Greek orthodox, Russian orthodox, Lutheran, and so on. Perhaps some might find the idea a bit creepy, but there are really some unique memorials here and lots of history, too, definitely some famous Seattle names like Denny and Frye, for example.

No problems with parking, or crowds, either!

I'm new to this forum and looking forward to the event. I don't know where past crawls have taken the group, but I would personally love to spend a day drawing Georgetown. I'll be happy wherever it ends up.

Re: Seattle, Washington USA...Georgetown

Sounds like a good choice, I haven't been there in a while. Are the boots and hat all renewed and spiffed up now?

Here's a link I discovered, not sure how much info is on it:

I also would love to sketch Georgetown, we were just there last month for their Gallery Walk. Lot's of great old buildings, antiques, trains and character. This would be my vote.

Sounds like there may be a consensus on Georgetown? I'd love it if we have a decision so I can share it with others! I don't know the area, so can anyone suggest a specific meetup location? I will need to check out the bus route to get there. Thank you for all discussion!! Exciting to explore new/old places!

Re: Seattle, Washington USA...where to meet

Post by jnewday »

I just looked at the Metro trip planner to see what the possibilities are for getting to Georgetown. Looks like the best one is to take the 41 from the Northgate Transit Center to the Westlake station and then hop on the light rail/Sounder and get off at the Georgetown stop (at 13th Ave S and S Bailey St). So you could have folks meet you at the light rail Georgetown stop. You will need to buy an ORCA card in order to do this trip and that requires either going downtown or mailing away for one.

I haven't checked a map so not sure how close this stop is to the downtown area where people would likely want to sketch, there may be a bit of a walk to get there, not sure.

Cool, I already have an Orca card! Don't know if Sounder runs on Saturdays though, do you? I am pretty sure there is some bus out that way. I don't mind walking a ways if I can get a location to meet up at!

I misread the transit information, it would be a bus that you catch, not light rail. I didn't find a light rail stop in Georgetown even though I know there is one in Columbia City. Maybe I just need to look into it more.

Don't forget that the Sounder has many different routes, just like buses do, some run on the weekends. For instance, the route to the airport runs on the weekends.
