We had a good sized group of about 25 meet up at the Chelsea Market. After drawing there for about an hour we moved on to the Highline Park. The day was sunny and warm for November and we spent a few hours sketching outside. A number of people left and the remaining group went back to the Market for lunch and to sketch some more. It was great to meet so many new sketchers! Looking forward to seeing everyone's drawings!

We met at the Chelsea Market:

Looking down towards the 9th Ave entrance of the market.

We eventually moved up to the Highline, an elevated freight train track that has been converted into a beautiful park. All you New Yorkers who haven't visited it yet need to get up there before it closes for the winter.

A view from the Highline. I've been test driving some water soluble crayons, shown here combined with some pencil.

After some time on the Highline, we broke for some delicious Chelsea Market food and then reconvened.

Some of my fellow SketchCrawlers. Apparently, the event attracts many nearsighted artists.

Here are a few more drawings.

Left: Man on the subway. The was actually my first drawing of the day.
Right: A cup of hot chocolate from Joe: The Art of Coffee.

Detail from a drawing I started at Joe. The store shut down before I could finish it. I'll just have to go back to finish it. Fortunately, it doesn't take much arm twisting to get me into a coffee shop.

All in all, it was a productive and enjoyable day of drawing. Thanks for a great SketchCrawl. Now I need some sleep...

Best,
Sunil

Wonderful images of New York- They are all so different and expressive. I have heard about that rail line that is now a parkland so it was good to see a drawing of someone who is there!

What a lovely day to be sketching in New York with fellow crawlers! Here are my sketches from the day:

First, some impressions of Chelsea Market and other crawlers. The first two were done using a Lamy Safari pen with Noodler's Ink in Lexington Grey, colored with Winsor & Newton and other watercolors:

And for this one, I decided to attempt using a dip pen and Higgins India Ink. Still have to get the hang of it, but was surprised at how easy it was to handle everything (pen, paper towels, ink bottle, ink bottle cap, etc.) even when sitting on the floor in an awkward position.

Then, a view from the High Line -- this was done with the Lamy/Noodler's Ink on a Muji kraft paper notebook, as an experiment. I used watercolors including white to make it more like gouache.

It's fun to see several drawings of the same view. Alisa, there's very nice sense of place in your drawings. Suma, great job capturing all the activity of the SketchCrawlers. Very nice color sensibilities all around, too!

See you next time.

I had a blast at my first Sketchcrawl. It was great to see new parts of Manhattan, meet interesting people and talented artists, and get some great sketching practice done. A sample of what I was able to do is below.
The rest can also be seen here: http://drawmo.wordpress.com/2009/11/22/ ... etchcrawl/

Nice sketches everyone!
I saw a short podcast about that high line track converted park in CoolHunting.com, looks as you have a wonderful new spot in the city to enjoy.
Great to see so many different styles and glad your group is growing, always enjoying your views of the big apple!

Greetings from Barcelona, Spain.
