Mission/Castro San Francisco solo crawl RESULTS

Post by pete »

I went down to San Francisco for a solo 'crawl; I was unable to join the main crowd at the Presidio, so I went around the Mission and the Castro instead (so I'm posting in a different thread to the Presidio group). I started off however at City Hall, after visiting the Paul Madonna exhibition at SF Public Library. I forgot my sketching stool, so this was always going to be a day of sitting most uncimfortably on the pavement. Luckily I found somewhere more comfortable.

At the Mission, I sketched the corner of Valencia and 16th, while sat at a bus-stop, chatting to a guy about how drawing is just a series of lines and choices.
Image

I had to crouch in the shade on a narrow street corner to draw this one, the Mission Dolores.

Here's the sketchbook itself; there are also drawings done from the window of the train from Davis.

I sauntered up to the Catsro. Sat right in the middle of the sidewalk to draw this scene, some beautiful houses on Sanchez.
Image
I waited until I got home to colour it in, because sitting on the floor all that time was starting to hurt. Most passers-by were friendly enough. But one person actually dropped some litter, right next to me, an empty plastic fruit carton.
Image

The Castro was interesting, and faitly busy, as there was a Silent Film Festival going on (everyone was being really quiet). I leaned on a newspaper box at Harvey milk Plaza to draw this.
Image

Finally, I took the F down Market, and stopped off at Eddie Rickenbacker's on 2nd for a beer and a sit-down on an actual chair, at an actal table, and drew one of the many vintage motorbikes that hang on their walls.

And so back to Davis, and to a nice cup of tea.

Oh, man, I feel like a slug now. You really turned out the sketches, and all of such high quality. My faves are the one on Sanchez St. and the monochrome mission. Very nice work, as always.

Lovely lines and colourwork. The buildings have great detail. I like your description of your day and seeing the sketchbook as well .
YOu did really well, considering you had to stand up or perch akwardly most of the time!

Loved scanning all your sketches; great stuff. The architectural sketches, monochromes and multi-colors, are all grand, and the framing adds to the presentation. Your motorcycle sketch caps it all.

Amazing sketches Pete! Very nice! :D Nice description of the day! I like the way you choose items to potrude the borders, gives it great dimension. Great colours too! nice footnotes on the first two sketches!

Do you start with pencil, move to ink, then add watercolor? I love this style of work!

Those are wonderful sketches!!! -- I had better practice before the next sketch crawl. I hope to be traveling from Dublin to London so will try to do some airport sketches. Kath
