French Riviera (RESULTS)

Post by MattJonez »

Technically this should be the Italian Riviera! We hopped across the border to find this medieval village that I discovered in a book of old photos by Jean Giletta. Cerriana lies in the mountains above San Remo, about an hours drive from Nice.
Image

We arrived a little late after missing the exit on the autostrada! -so we didn't get as much done as we'd like. Here are my sketches from the day.

Image
We found a comfortable spot overlooking the town. I warmed up with a sketch of F.X. drawing the old Roman church.
Image
The town was full of these little 3-wheeled Piaggio vans. Regular cars can't fit in the narrow streets so these were used to transport goods.

The architecture of the town is stunning with the ancient buildings somehow fused with the rock. There's an entire absence of town planning where houses have been built on top of each other at every angle!
Image

We had decent weather & another grand day out. The locals were interested in what we were doing. I made friends with two old ladies who were the guardians of the old church. They gave me a tour & laughed at my poor Italian! I showed them the old Giletta photograph & they led me to the spot where it was taken. The town hasn't changed much in 123 years!

The others will be posting their drawings tout suite!

Carlos' sketches

Post by Carlos »

Hi everyone, I have been looking around and it's been a pleasure to see everyone's work! Anyway, we had a great day out sketching, Ceriana is a beautiful town forgotten by time!

I really liked those Piaggio three-wheelers, here's one in front of the chaotic old town:

Here's a couple of old italian guys who were hanging out at the restaurant/tavern where we had lunch:

Here's FX sketching the old town, this was a great spot!

Here's a watercolor sketch of the Piaggio overlooking the surrounding hills. I messed up the values for this one a little bit so I did a small correction in PS:

OK I'm throwing in two sketches I did in Eze, I went there with Sebastian the other day, I think he is posting his as well:

Well, That's it for this edition of sketchcrawl, it was great fun, we have to start thinking about where to go next time! Great sketching everyone!!

I'm jealous of the lovely town you sketched in!!!

Matt - Lovely pen lines on your sketches!!! Great job on the architectural details without a lot of fuss.

Sebtikh - Beautiful!!!

Carlos - They had those 3 wheelers in Capri when I was there. Great sketches of the town and the interesting faces of the Italian men.

El Mahico - Wonderful sketches of the town. Wow!

Fantastic collection of work from all of you! I'm coming there for the next sketchcrawl!!
