Los Angeles - California - USA [RESULTS]

Post by leeroy »

Los Angeles crawlers! Post your sketches here and tell about your experience.

Here's my story:

I arrived at Lake Balboa Park in Anthony C. Beilenson Park (aka Balboa Park) in the city of Van Nuys (greater L.A. area). There was some mention in the forum of Descanso Garden, which I thought was another name for this park, but is apparently another park entirely. Not sure how that confusion arose.

Anyway, I arrived a bit late at around 12:30 and sketched until about 4 o'clock. I never did see any other sketchcrawlers while I was there. Seems like we had a light showing and a couple people left a little on the early side, perhaps. The cherry blossoms were not in full bloom in longer, but there was plenty to sketch in the way of weekenders hanging out at the park, and lots of ducks and geese. Well... Enough blabbing. Here are my results from the day. Most of these were drawn in blue pencil and inked after I got home.
(Oh, and I'm posting small versions, 'cuz there are so many. For larger sizes, visit my flickr photos at http://flickr.com/photos/artandstory or my blog at http://blog.artandstory.com. :) )

Leeroy, sorry miss you at the SketchCrawl. I meet up with a small group at 10:30. The weather is a bit cold yesterday. I think the group walk to another area of the park probably around the time you arrive ... may be that's why we all miss each other.

I Joined friends for dinner and a gallery walk in Culver City, CA (west LA)
managed to squeeze off a sketch on a postcard from the Jazz Bakery Club.
This was a gentleman sitting at the next table to us. My friend Paul also did a sketch which the man kept.

the image after his dinner companion noticed us drawing it
at the adjacent table.

Thanks for your nice comments, sketchcrawl friends. Alina, aka Ice-Cream Monster, I'm sorry we missed each other, too. I love your sketches. Jim, aka storydesign, thanks for sharing your sketch and photo (with your friend Paul's sketch) of the subject. Jazz Bakery is a cool spot and I live close to it. Gotta get back sometime soon.

Cheers, Everyone.

What great representation from the LA folks!

Leeroy, great line work.

Alina, your color is delicious, and the sketches really capture movement and mood.

Storydesign, I'm always scared that somebody will catch me like that! LOL

I put a bit more explanation in my blog at http://shihonakaza.blogspot.com/2008/04 ... -park.html, if you want to check it out.

Leeroy, sorry we missed you. I left around 12:30, and the rest of the group moved on to the waterfall area on the other side of the lake. You still got great sketches!
