Los Angeles - CA - USA [Results]

Post by akiko »

I don't see any LA posts yet, so I guess I will start -

I took the Goldline Metro to China town. I got there early and started my walk in the residential area.

A lot of people were walking towards the main streets. I saw people doing tai-chi in the community parks. Incense were in the air from a local temple.
I then met with the other crawlers at the gate in central plaza. There were about 8 or 9 of us.

After lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant most people had to go. I sketched a little more by the train station.

I also had to leave at about 1:30pm. One of these days I will do a full day!

Nice journal-type sketchrawl, Akiko. I really like your simplification of values to capture light. Cool beans.

Akiko, lovely drawings! I think that look is what I aspire to when i try to combine ink with watercolor washes. In the past, though, I have been frustrated with how poorly the watercolor absorbs into bristol board. Do you use a heavy paper?

Doodle Dose, I like your line work. The variations in weight are very energetic, and the pieces read very well.

Great sketches, both of you. Akiko - super street scenes, and Doodledose, I enjoyed your doodles very much.

thanks to all for the feedbacks.

john - great sketches! That plaza isn't that big and yet there's so much to sketch. The bottom one with the table /booth really captures the atmosphere of that place.

slavidzee - all my sketches were done in my (Utrecht) sketch book. It's just regular paper - 65lb.

--- akiko your street scenes are beautiful; esp. the second with the "backyardien", rusty colour-pallete!

-- John your doodles are more than that ;-) your "post-production-shadows" set good accents in your fine linework

Thanks for sharing,
T.

I adore this style of sketching! I want to be able to sketch the street scenes of Tokyo and Kyoto like this, but I don't practice enough :(

Great work, Akiko and John! I've really enjoyed seeing Chinatown through your eyes on that day. You've both captured the spirit of the place so well!

Here are my sketches from Saturday, followed by my husband Steve. Please bear in mind - we're both REALLY new to sketching!

It was so wonderful to meet all of you and we will certainly participate again!

Wow, really good stuff here.

Akiko, I really love the colors in that second sketch.

Doodle Dose, did you use a tablet? Those are great. I love that second one.

Shari, I really like that second one of the tree and lamps.

I can't wait until I move to LA in 2 years. I'm really looking forward to going on a crawl with so much talent.

It was fun meeting up with everyone this Saturday at Sketchcrawl. It was my first one in L.A. and my second one ever.

Image
Met up with the nice folks in Chinatown. Drew this little souvenir shop that caught my eye.

Image
At lunch, there was this little fortune teller shop across the way where this old man was sitting in the doorway.

Image
After the group split up, I walked down to Olvera street and sketched the Churro's cart.

Chinatown looks like a great place to sketch.

Akiko - Super group of sketches! Love the colors in your second one. I think that is my favorite.

Doodle Dose - Great job on the architecture of the buildings. You nailed it!

Shari - Nice job, especially the lanterns stretched out by the trees.

Steve - Impressive windows in your first sketch. Nice!

Sumosays - Great sketches...nice lines and hatching. Love the one of the churro cart!
