It was a perfect day in Tucson to spend at the Reid Park Zoo. There were four of us today. Here are some of my sketches.

Bill-thanks.
Mat-actually I did 17 sketches today, but am too tired to color the rest and of course, I really don't like some of them.

Thank you, Donna for leaving a comment.

At least you really seemed to see an elephant whereas I saw it just on the small screen ;-)

I really like the baby giraffe leaning towards tree and food ;-)

moving on to the gibbons, this is one of my faves

the otters are difficult to draw since they move around so fast, showing off for the crowd, but here is my attempt

i really enjoyed the giraffes. this one is Denver and she's 17 years old

a little girl said these were pink since they eat pink fish...hmmm

this guy had sad, expressive eyes as he sat, occasionally picking up something from the ground to sniff it. He just looked at us looking at him.

Donnam - Great color in these. Did you use watercolor or ink with the black pen? Love the giraffe eating the leaves, and those colorful flamingos! Wish I could have been sketching at a nice warm zoo.

Alanna - You got so many done. I love the way you placed the gibbons on the pages...good thinking. Super giraffe and macaws too!

Thanks everyone. I used a uniball Vision Micron black pen and my watercolors are Schmincke.

Wow Donna your colors are awesome! Someone else was raving about the Schminke watercolors... Do you love them?

Alanna, that's definitely a black-crowned night heron that you drew, great work with the pose! It's unmistakeable!

Pica-I do absolutely love the Schmincke watercolors. I use half pans. What is really great about the pans is that the paint is so creamy to the touch, not like a hard brick that the WindsorNewton Cotman colors were. I would have to use a ton of water to soften the WN, but the Schmincke only uses minimal water to wet them and dried washes on the lid of the palette are just as brillant when they are rewetted. Highly recommend!
