French Riviera - France

Post by MattJonez »

Hey all- a few of us from the story & art departments of 'A Monster In Paris' in Nice, France will be joining the sketchcrawl next weekend. We're aiming to spend the day at a 'village perché' close to Nice- St Paul de Vence- a picturesque, hill-top town with impressive fortified walls & dozens of tiny art galleries.
Good luck everyone . . .

RESULTS!

Post by MattJonez »

The Nice chapter of SketchCrawl was formed by myself, Carlos & Sebastian from the art dept. on 'A Monster In Paris'. Carlos & I spent the day in picturesque village perché St.Paul de Vence while Seb headed out to medieval fortress town Entrevaux.

Matt's sketches

Post by MattJonez »

I kicked off with a study of the narrow streets that give St Paul such character.

Image
The guitarist in the photo above showed up as I was drawing & I couldn't resist switching to another page to quickly capture him. Whenever kids came by with their parents he would put on a red clown nose & dazzle them with his kazoo skills!
Image
Rodin's 'Thinker' contemplates the great view from the town walls, while Carlos draws on.

Here is Carlos sitting dangerously close to a fast game of pétanques.

Some gestures & poses of the old boys playing pétanques.

A local lady stopped as she saw me painting the water-colour above & asked me if I'd make one of the facade of her shop. She led me by the arm around the corner to show me her antiques shop & I was happy to accept the commission. I made a quick pencil rough for her approval then over the next couple nights worked up the painting below from photographs.

Our first SketchCrawl was a great day out in surroundings that beg to be drawn, and as an added bonus I discovered SketchCrawl PAYS!

Amazing sketches, you are all very talented artists.

Seb - I like the layout on the first sketch very much.

Carlos - The 4th sketch has great shading and textures.

MattJonez - I like the splatter marks that you used throughout
your sketches. My favorite are the killer looking trees while the
men are playing pétanque. That game is popular in Marin, Ca.
There is a park with room enough for 4 games. Bravo on the
watercolored sketches. Love the corner street angle.

Tres agreables!! Magnifique!

I like all the sketches! I love the colors in Seb's watercolors, the old men walking around posing in Carlo's ;) and the lovely lines and pretty trees in Matt's.

J'aime beaucoup les photos aussi :D:D

Your group did such great work!!

Matt - Great sketch of the narrow street...good sense of perspective. Wonder sketch with the thinker. Super job on your watercolor and the commission too!

Carlos - You did a lot of really good sketches. I especially like the guitar player, the tall narrow building, and the silhouettes of the people in the park.

Seb - All 3 are lovely in pen & wash. Great job on the small house perched on the rock and the one of the houses and the bridge.
