Sketchcrawl Honolulu was a success!

Sketchcrawl Honolulu was a success! The Honolulu Advertiser picked up the story late in the week and placed a small article with a picture on the front page of the Island Life section on both Friday's and Saturday's morning paper. The Advertiser's article was a surprise and attracted the group of sketchers to Chinatown

We were supported by the Nuuanu Ave. community. Nolan Zane, Addie Cabjuan and crew (Zaney's Restaurant), Ed Korybski and family (Honolulu Arts and Culture District) Sandy Pohl (Louis Pohl Gallery), Takeo ( 2Couture), Tony Chang (Chinatown walking tour) and Erik Takehashi (Art’s @ Mark's Garage) attended. We have some great pictures of the children playing in the park and of the sketchers!
The morning turned from a dark and rainy to a cool bright day, perfect for sketching! We warmed up in the Smith/Beretania Park while the children played on the lawn and new playground equipment.
The morning sketchers were all new faces to the neighborhood. We recognized Ella and Ashley from New Life Church. Gretchen has a playful colorful sketch of the playground. Roosevelt High's Spencer W. shared with us his sketchbook full of awesome characters and storyboards for the animations he's working on. We hope to post more of his drawings.
The group next walked thru Chinatown, enjoying the sights, sounds and visuals of the Maunakea Marketplace. We headed down Hotel Street and followed along River Street down past the Chinese Cultural Center to the Japanese Temple, our second sketching stop recommended by our walking tour leader (Gretchen).
We had a sample lunch of Royal Kitchen's baked manapua, filled with chicken curry. Min shared a jin dui (Chinese seasame, rice balls filled with black sugar) with Chansi who enjoyed the jin dui and purchased a boxful.
We returned early to Mark's Garage to freshen up and take a break from the heat of the midday sun.
Tony Chang purchased Chinatown backscratcher souvenirs for the sketchercrawlers and joined us for a group photo. Wow, we have some great sketches!
Gretchen had a few, very nice contour sketches with color. Irene from Arizona shared with us her sketchbook and places she visited during her week in Hawaii, Kirstin's sketches were full of values and textures (I suspect Kirstin a famous painter?). Chansi's (Florida) temple sketch reflected the fun she had sketching while sitting next to Gretchen.
In the mid afternoon Hugh, Dee and a family of five showed up at Mark's Garage.
A few people called to say they could not attend and looked forward to a second Sketchcrawl. On the international level, 40 cities in different counties took part in the activity. We have nice sketches to post on the web site and the event was enjoyed by our new friends.
