Alcatraz/San Francisco 11/13

Post by miss p »

Hey everyone:

It was a great day out with perfect weather. Terrific meeting everyone, let's do it again soon! Here's a couple, one of a street performer at Fisherman's Wharf, and another of a decaying building on Alcatraz.

Take care,
miss p

First off the day was beautiful, Sunny high 60's, no wind. I would guess we had about 40 people in our group. Be sure to check out Enrico's Blogfor photo's from the day.

Anyway here are my pencil sketches. Next time I will give the water color's a go.

Image
This is a map of the island and a number corresponding to my sketches.

Image
1 - This was the first thing I spotted when I got off the boat and I think it also caught the eye of many others, as the rangers had to ask several of us to move to make way for the next group.

Image
2 - About a 100 yards up the main path this is the corner of the main barracks/apartments of the facility

Image
3 - This is the old officers club from the original army days. It's in pretty bad shape, but a great subject to draw.

Image
4 - This is at the top of the hill near the front door to the cell house. The left is the warden's house the right is the light house. After a few minutes I got tired of drawing buildings and went on to a different subject.

Image
5 - This is a lady sititng at a bench looking at the SF skyline. She was leaning over talking to a friend. The bridge on the left is the SF side of the Bay Bridge.

Image
6 - This is along the back path to the garden's . The fence at the top surrounds the prisoner's rec yard.

If you're wondering who I was I was Mike, the big guy in the green shirt. Now you can see why they call me biga. This was my first sketchcrawl, I didn't know anybody and had a great time. Everyone was super friendly and would talk to you or leave you alone to draw, so don't hold back, get out to the next one.

Alcatraz was a blast. Here's a quick, partly computer-color scan of my sketch of the south end.

The work coming out of Alcatraz looks amazing. I really wanted to stay for that trip since I've never drawn on Alcatraz. Just never occured to me to draw there for some reason. Looking forward to seeing more from the bay! Great work all.

Hey Ms. P and All, Nice to see your sketches up here. Everyone's stuff looks great. Love the wobbly milk crate and the person in shade under the ledge. I wish I could've been in town to drawl. Maybe it'll inspire me to finally visit Alcatraz after living in SF for 30 something years...

Cheers,
Amber

Great work, everyone.

It was a lot of fun to see so many artists out and roaming around. Everywhere you looked there was somebody cradling a sketchbook and making art. Had a great time sitting around with a small group afterwards; passing the books around and talking shop.

The one bad thing: I got to the boat at the last minute and did not know that Tadahiro Uesugi was in our midst until, well, until today (the day after.) I would have loved to have quietly sneaked a peak over his shoulder a some point, that's for sure. . .
