Heads and Hands Class Field Trip

Post by John Juan »

Hello everyone! I went to Cal Berkley today to sketch from some castings of famous ancient Greek statues they are restoring. Here are two portrait studies I did.
-Statues make great models!

Great tones you've got there. Yeah, statues aren't going to look at you strangely and walk quickly away, or complain, or really even... move. :D

Indeed, they really did a good job ... but only if the sketchee is doing a good one, too  Seems like you have been a perfect team!

John, these are really rich drawings. Lovely proportions and shadings.

Beautiful pieces.
THINK! Why is there NEVER time enough to do something RIGHT, but ALWAYS enough time to do it OVER?

Beautiful work! Nice shading!
Did you use conte, charcoal or graphite?

Both are only graphite on toned paper.

Part of the assignment was to finish the drawings over Thanksgiving break; so I added some more structure to Parocles' form.

Thanks again to everyone who left me comments.

Here are some more portraits I did of live models in the same class. All of these are charcoal on newsprint paper. Some have conte mixed in as-well. The last one was a quick 2 minute sketch.
