Mark your calendars … July 23rd it is!

Just like last summer, we set the SketchCrawl day on the same date on which the friends at Urban Sketchers are gonna hold their yearly gathering.
This year they are meeting in Lisbon!

From Enrico: I’ve been asked to set dates for the rest of the year in advance.
So here goes: the 33rd World Wide SketchCrawl will be held on October 15th 2011.
(Note – I won’t make a topic for it on the forums until we are done with the 32nd)

Gus: Likewise the upcoming event post for SketchCrawl 33rd will be posted at that time as well.

This thought crystalized last night in my mind: we should to make this World Wide SketchCrawl a benefit drawing marathon for Japan!

We HAVE to help our fellow artists and all our friends in Japan! They need our help.
We have raised money for a good cause before with SketchCrawl and it’s time to do it again. It’s time to come together and draw with a real meaningful and important reason!

Here’s how it could work:
Each participant around the world will be responsible for raising a minimum of $100 in donations for his drawing marathon day …
It would work very much like an AidsWalk, you’d look for sponsors to pledge a certain amount of funds for you to draw all day …
We should get all donations pledged to ArtistsForJapan a trustworthy fund that works through GIVE2ASIA

With hundreds of SketchCrawlers around the globe we could end up with a significant donation and on top of that we’ll let our Japanese friends, brothers and sisters know how much they are in our minds and our hearts.

The Give2Asia SketchCrawl website is ready! Please direct your donations and/or sponsors to this dedicated webpage! For those of you outside the US, you can still make donations to Give2Asia but they won’t be tax deductible, we recommend choosing a local non-profit of your choice that is working in the Japan disaster relief. And be sure to come to the SketchCrawl forums too see where Crawlers are getting together!

How do we make a benefit SketchCrawl?

Thanks for your responses and questions everyone.
We are currently working to set up an account with GIVE2ASIA that will be dedicated to SketchCrawl funds. I’ll let you know as soon as that is ready.

How would the sponsoring work?

Here’s what I am thinking.
You reach out to as many people as you can asking them the following:
“I am gonna sketch ALL day on April 16th to raise funds for disaster relief in Japan. Help me! Be my sponsor in this drawing marathon I am participating in!
Please pledge what you can and donate it to GIVE2ASIA at this following url”

I will give you a special URL for SketchCrawl donations asap!
But the idea is that your sponsors would donate directly to give2asia and let you know how much they donated for you. Every SketchCrawler would keep track of his own sponsors/donations.
I am in the process of making a downloadable “SketchCrawl for Japan – sponsor sheet”. This you can use to track the sponsors that are supporting your sketchcrawl and how much they are donating for you.
Think about it, If everyone one of your sponsors is donating $20 for you, you only need 5 to raise a $100!
So aim for the sky! See how much money you can raise … Japan needs this!
And every little bit counts!

Important! for those of you outside the US, donating to Give2Asia will not make donations a taxbreak for your donors. That’s the tricky thing.
So … I would suggest choosing a local non-profit that of course still donates all its proceeds to Japan.
We want donations to be a taxbreak for the donors IN YOUR country, so the best way is to find a good local NPO.
The redcross should work almost everywhere in the world.
But let us know in the forums what you think are the best organizations in your own country, hopefully we can try and coordinate locally that way.

Wow! What a great sketchcrawl this past saturday! It was hands down the most attended with artists participating and gathering in more than 90 different locations around the globe. Don’t miss checking out all the drawings on the forums! It really still blows my mind that on these days we are soo many around the world drawing at the same time, it’s such a good feeling. A shout goes out to San Paolo in Brazil with a record 120 artists sketchcrawling there! Amazing! In San Francisco we weren’t too far behind with roughly 100 artists participating. It was really fun seeing everyone at the De Young Museum at the end of the afternoon. Below are my day’s watercolors. I started with sketching my daughter, whom I’ve honestly found for quite some time hard to capture. She’s so ridiculously adorable it’s hard to do it justice. These are among the first attempts I feel pretty good about. So, that’s it … and for next SketchCrawl early April! We’ll have a date asap!
